We started the day paying our respects to Angus “Gus” Fisher who played his 250
senior game of footy which is a fantastic effort.  Brad Kirk spoke of Angus’s career
and early life that raised a bit of intrigue.  The boys followed him through the banner
and onto the field of battle where the EMU’s awaited.  We had readied ourselves for
a much tougher game of footy knowing that the Morphett Vale boys will bring the
physicality we had been craving for a couple of weeks.
 
The first quarter was a tight, tough battle with both midfields battling it out for field
position, played between the 50’s most of the quarter with 2 goals each at the break. 
The huddle was excited by the challenge and whilst we hadn’t really hit our straps,
we were happy with our contested footy.  Kicking with a sypher of a breeze, the boys
put some width on the game, added a bit of run and we doubled our score to 4.6 30
to 2.0 12 at half time – the boys were happy but we knew we had a game on our
hands.  Morphies coach gave his team an almighty rev up and we readied the boys
for them to come out hard after the break.  We had not impacted the scoreboard as
we should have, which might have put the result beyond them.
 
The emu’s ran and shared the ball all quarter, played with a lift in intensity and
played fast footy which put our defence under the pump for the first time in a few
weeks.  It was good to see as the emu’s kicked 4 goals 1 in the first 12 minutes of
the quarter – moving in front on the score board.  We had probably only dropped by
10% in terms of effort but our concentration and desire suffered, our ability to switch
mentally onto defence was too slow and our midfields preferred to stand off rather
than lock on which allowed Morphies out of the contested space to easy.  We
allowed to many hit up leads and let them chain together possessions and move
down the field a little too easy.  We wrestled the momentum back for the last 8
minutes and kicked 2 goals 1 to put us one goal in front going into the last quarter. 
At three quarter time 6.7 43 to 6.1 37.  The huddle was calm and resolute, and after
some much needed direction and focus, do it for “Gus” rang out as they broke. 
 
Last quarter was a great example of the conditioning and abilities of the b grade,
kicking 5.1 to 1.2 flaggies dominated most positions around the ground in the last
quarter.  Bunga who had presented all day, finally got some reward with better
service and quicker entries, kicking 3 goals, Brad Scott who had dominated the C
grade the night before had a great game and kicked 2 goals.  Our midfield beasts,
Caire and Cavouras smashed in all day and you could see the effect on their
opponents as the game wore on.  Final Score 11.8 to 7.3 a good win. 
Congratulations again to “GUS” on 250 senior games.
 

We look forward now to the bye, freshen everyone up and hopefully see a few
players return from longer term injuries to get some game time before the finals.

Round 15 we hosted Morphett Vale Football Club, after a tough first hit out against
the Emu’s we knew this would again be a good challenge for the group with the
Emu’s needing to continue winning to lock away their finals spot. Morphett Vale
entered the game on a 3 game win streak and averaged over 80 points per game in
that time so we knew we had to shut down their scoring to give us the best
opportunity.

It was a tight first quarter with Morphett Vale kicking with a slight breeze and they
were able to use this to their advantage by holding the ball in their half for majority of
the quarter. Our defence held up well led by Brad Kirk to hold MV to 1 goal for the
quarter. Reflecting at quarter time we were lucky that they had not made us pay
more, at the break we noted that they had probably been 5% better than us in all
aspects of the game but we were still in the mix. The second quarter we lifted our
intent and cleaned our skills but the contest continued to be a tight battle with the
motto for the boys being “We have to be better for longer” knowing that we had to
persist to break them down. At half time Morphett Vale led 3.5-23 to Flaggies 2.5-17.
In the rooms the feeling was calm and confident that we could break the game open,
but understood we were in a tight battle.

The third quarter our persistence of following our style began to pay off by hitting the
scoreboard more frequently and holding the ball in our front half of the ground. Our
tackling pressure lifted and inspiring efforts led by Adam Bunworth and sitting under
countless high balls for marks inspired more of a charge from the group. Kicking into
the slight breeze we managed to kick 2 goals 4 points and defensively we held MV
scoreless for the quarter. At 3 quarter time you could feel the game had swung in our
favour but we knew that MV could score quickly as they had in the first fixture we
played against them this year. It was a tight start to the fourth quarter, we were
reduced to 17 players due to a yellow card but we were able to open the game up in
this time and hit the scoreboard. We unfortunately then lost Nath Beenham with a
head knock in a marking clash with Dave Kearsley. Once played resumed Dave went
back and kicked a clutch goal from outside 50 to put us in a comfortable position. In
the end we were able to come away with a 34 point win in tough circumstances, it
was a very pleasing win. Final score Flagstaff Hill 8.16- 64 to Morphett Vale 4.6- 30.
Again our inaccurate kicking kept our opposition in the game, but we are still getting
shots in good positions and keep peppering inside 50s with our defensive pressure.

Better players for the day included Adam Bunworth who was our best, his fearless
approach on the ground and in the air was instrumental in getting us going in the
game, Brad Kirk was again outstanding in 1 on 1 contests and not letting the ball out
the back of the defenders, Leith Mitchell shouldered a large ruck load after we lost Blake Aldridge to an ankle injury and Leith played his best A grade game for the year, Huw Channing, Macca Short and Sam Smith rounded out our best players but we had multiple good contributors on the day. Sam Smith kicked 3 goals on the day which was great reward for his effort, he could have easily thrown in the towel after missing a few early but continued to lead up and work hard and was rewarded for
this.

We head into a bye week now which is a great opportunity to refresh and reset for a
massive run home. Cheers
