To quote Eddie from the ‘Footy Show’… “What a big week in football”.
After a huge result last weekend knocking off ‘top of the table’ Christies Beach, we
went into this round well undermanned with only 18 U17.5 players available with
some of those not 100%. With players away, sick, injured or playing SANFL, we
headed to Happy Valley well short of our best side. Well that calls for all on board to
step up and take ownership.

Our motto this week was ‘Vanquish the Vikings’ and to the lads credit they had a look
in their eye that they were going to give that a decent crack at achieving.
Thanks to Hazzy and the U15s. 3 lads put their hand up to help us field a side…
Ethan Stone, Cohen Carlier and Deccy Couldwell were ready to make their U17.5
debut.

We lost the toss and were asked to begin the game kicking into a slight breeze. If our
defenders could hold up and our midfield nullify the oppositions run with the footy,
then we can reset at quarter time. The boys were more than ok and won the quarter.
They were solid with attack on the footy and the skills were backed up from last
week.

Our 2 nd quarter was challenging even though we had the wind at our backs. We still
had plenty of fight, but the Vikings realized they had to pick up their game to be in
the contest. We hit halftime with a 5 point buffer and the group felt like they had a
good handle on it but I felt we may run out of legs with minimal rotations available.
Thankfully though, all 3 U15s had a bit of game time which was a tremendous aid in
keeping the U17.5 lads reasonably fresh and able to run the game out.
Every Flaggy lad found an extra leg in the 2 nd half and never gave the opposition a
look in. Coming away with a 21 point win against an almost full strength Vikings team
was possibly our best win of the season to date.

Special moments included the 2 Stoney brothers having their 1 st game of footy
together, Cohen Carlier getting to stand his brother on the opposition team and
Deccy having a run up forward and getting a taste of what to expect next season.
Lachie Ellis has found form and has been a big reason we are being successful as a
team. Jimmy Keating just keeps getting better and his last quarter was some of the
best individual efforts you will see in junior footy topped off with a couple goals,
which is rare. Jack Chaplin continues to find his feet after a lengthy break due to
injury.

The last 3 weeks has shown what we are capable of, so now it’s all about keeping
momentum and allowing these lads to keep exploring their potential.
Next stop, Aldinga.

And by the way… GO PIES!
See you at the footy

It was the tale of two halves!  Running out onto the expansive wide Happy Valley
Oval, we were keen to test our running power on another big oval, whilst the skies
were threatening we played in perfect footy conditions.  We welcomed back for his
homecoming game Zac Cavouras, his first game for points this season.  He showed
right from the start how a big bodied midfielder will impact on our contested ball for
the rest of the season both A and B grade no doubt.  We also welcomed back into
the team young Bailey Richman, what a return 3 goals and some great play.  Happy
Valley started the game really well with some significant inclusions, all with A grade
history gave them really good structure and ball movement, it was a tough contested
first half, it was good for us to be exposed to some great footy and they had three
goals early which put us back on our heels.  Our boys had to really reach deep and
with the understanding that things weren’t as easy this week we started to get going
midway through the first quarter.  Once we started hitting our short kicks, switching
the ball to the wing and injecting some run we were under way.  Matt Caire playing
his midfield role, providing all the strength and contested footy,  BT dominated the
first half, playing as our quarterback he sat in their passing lanes and intercepted
their kicks, and in turn we went through him going forward. His kicking again really
standing out.   Our relentless tackling pressure was a feature of the first half,  our
defence and midfield battled non-stop for the last 3 minutes in their goal square and
held them out.  We went into half time 3.1 to 3.0.

Omaz grabbed the squad and reminded them of their defensive responsibilities on
their way into the huddle.  I sensed the group were up for the fight and were in fact
relishing the battle.  The second half commenced and we got a great response from
the entire group.  Our midfield took over,  our physicality and fitness ensures we are
going as hard in the last quarter as we are in the first. The standout of the third
quarter however was Saleh Baltagie who started the third at half forward standing at
half back.  He went on a one man show and had 4 goals by the end of the quarter,  a
great quarter of footy by anyones standards.  By three quarter time we had no
bench, losing three to injuries, had scored 4 goals 2 points and played the entire
quarter in our half.   The boys dug deep in the last, we hit the scoreboard for another
5 goals 2 points.  Omaz in one pocket using all the tricks kicked 4 for the day, putting
on a masterful block on a defender that shook the Happy Valley clubrooms, young
Bailey Richman was everywhere and when he kicked truly for his second goal from
the south eastern pocket the boys rejoiced.  Several minutes later he received a free
kick on a tighter angle opposite pocket.  After waving away a good hit up lead from
Saleh in a great spot, Bailey calmly kicked a magnificent goal and finished on 3 for
the day – great performance.

Happy Valley really challenged us early and made us react and learn which was a
great outcome – we look forward to Aldinga this week, who had a good win over
COVE.

Flagstaff Hill 8 13 61 defeated Happy Valley 1 9 15

Best Players: Sam Smith, Ben Burbridge, Aiden Grayson, Ryan Mountford, Nick
Bailey, Cameron Blake.

Goal Kickers: Sam Smith 2, Sam Jacobs 2, Aiden Grayson 2, Nick Bailey 1, Macca

Round 13 at Happy Valley we celebrated Ben Burbridge’s 100 th  club game. With the
weather setting in very wet in the warm up, it was set up for a tough contest which
the milestone man Benny would thrive in. Coming into the game we spoke about
Happy Valley being one of the in form teams in the competition by winning their last
3 games in a row averaging 80 points over that streak, sitting 4 th  on the ladder and
desperate for a top 3 spot so we would need to be on our game from the get go.

The game started well with the boys adapting to the conditions quickly and playing a
great style of wet weather footy, we dominated the first quarter field position and our
pressure was elite all over the ground which was led by Aiden Grayson, Nath
Beenham and Brad Patterson. We controlled the inside 50 count and tackle count
along with scoring shots but with poor weather we were inaccurate by kicking 2 goals
6 points to 1 behind. The second quarter was much the same we controlled the
game with our wet weather footy and getting it moving our way quickly, our defensive
pressure again was strong holding Happy Valley to 1 point for the half and played the
game in our front half but again our accuracy in front of goal let us down, at half time
we led 4.11- 35 to 0.1-1.

The first 10 minutes of the third quarter we played in our half but only managed to
add 1 point to our score in that time, for the remainder of the quarter Happy Valley
played a great final part of the quarter to really put us under the pump and constantly
get repeat inside 50s. Our defence held up to the constant attack only allowing 1
goal 5 points in for the last 15-20 minutes of the quarter. At 3 quarter time it was a
great opportunity for the group to come together and reassess what we were doing
well and what we needed to add to this which was playing with a bit more dare and
confidence to clear the defence. The 4 th  quarter was a great response as we slowed
happy Valleys momentum and were able to hit the scoreboard ourselves putting an
end to their resurgence in what was a tough game and one coaches were happy
how the team responded to the challenges and to also hold Happy Valley to 1 goal
for the game.

Sam Smith, Benny Burbridge and Aiden Grayson led the way from the front for us all
day, with Mountford, Bailey and Blake rounding out our better players but we could
have thrown a blanket over the players who played above their required role on the
weekend. Sam Jacobs, Grayson and Smith all kicked 2 each with Bailey and Macca
Short kicking 1 each.

An exciting game this week against Aldinga, they gave us a good challenge when we
played earlier this year with their youth and their daring style of ball movement so we
will be looking forward to the challenge again.
