After a loss last week against Reynella the under 13 boys were keen to show what
they are made of in an important clash with Cove who sat just one spot below us on
the ladder. The start of the game was pretty much one way traffic in our direction
with our centre clearance work impressive through Liam Cooper in the ruck and Jake
Slattery, Conner Cutting and Fletcher Langeluddecke on ball. Up forward Jack
Lemmey and Callum Athey were providing a pathway to goal and if the ball
rebounded out it seemed to go straight back in due to the efforts of Declan Stone
across half back. By quarter time we held a strong lead however the second and
third term became a real arm wrestle with Cove gaining the upper hand. Without
Kojo Antwi in defence we could have gone into 3 quarter time further behind than the
narrow 1 point lead being enjoyed by the visitors. At 3/4 time the message was
simple – if we played our best footy in the final quarter we would win the game. In this
quarter the boys really stood up led by Liam again in the ruck, Macklin Brook playing
the “Puma” role and everyone digging in and being determined not to lose. The most
pleasing win of the year so far!

After a couple of big games against the top the ladder contenders we prepared for
our contest against the Cobra’s from Hallet Cove. For some reason, COVE feel they
owe us and always bring the heat early which we expect. We had held both
Reynella and Noarlunga to limited scores so we wanted to keep COVE to under their
previous score against us which was 44!
Pregame was about paying our respects to Angus “GUS” or “FISH” Fisher who was
running out for his 350 th Club game, another stalwart of the club – has dedicated his
playing career to Flaggies and is a multiple premiership player from junior to senior,
has 50 A grade games to his credit. The boys played a stellar game of footy and
rewarded Fish with a goal and it was so satisfying to see every FHFC player on the
ground make their way to FISH when he kicked the goal in the last quarter – he was
chaired off to great applause. The club also paid due respect to NAIDOC week and
we watched a 4 minute clip of the AFL Indigenous stars to get us going. Pete Crab
had prepared a really thoughtful and insightful script which he read out prior to match
time as well.
We all know finals are played on big ovals so I went into this game with young Jake
Bunworth as full forward to take a look at his attributes, he brings a lot of run, fitness,
fast leads and elite kicking skills and he put it all out there, whilst the team honoured
him with great skills and really good kicking to advantage – Jake kicked 10 goals and
COVE had no answer. Developing many options is apart of the second half of the
season and the boys are entrenched in team first and playing either B or C grade to
best of their abilities if not selected in the A grade.
With the addition of Brendan Hillier across the half back line and Draper to return
next game the back 6 are looking really strong – a good blend of speed, height,
strength and aggression. The backline was under the pump in the first quarter and
we gave up 3 goals over the back, more due to the lack of midfield run into defence
that errors but we got the wakeup call we needed. After quarter time we kicked 20
goals 7 points to their 3 goals 2 points.
The reserves are playing really strong football across all the age groups and all
players getting the chance are performing so well. Selections will be tough going
forward and we are excited by that. Having a healthy and fit list is what we will need
to take the club to where we want to get to. Mason Carney, DT, BT, Speaky and Matt
Caire were the best of a very good cohort of players on the day.
After a week off to refresh the mind, body and spirit we look forward to Christies
Beach at Saints park – who come off a great win for them against Noarlunga. They
always present as a tough and hard challenge on their home oval.
Respecting all our elders.

Saturday we took on Cove off the back of two really strong performances, with a few
of our more consistent players unavailable it was a good chance for players to step
up and stake their claim to be in the team come the business end of the season.
The game started slow with Cove running a defensive style playing multiple numbers
behind the ball from the start, as well as our boys not playing the style we had the
previous two weeks which can be expected to have a low spot at some point. At
quarter time the boys addressed this and after a slower start to the second quarter
we were able to lay several tackles in a row to stop their momentum, this seemed to
switch the players on and for the remainder of the second quarter we were able to hit
the scoreboard by kicking seven goals to zero, at half time Flagstaff led 9.4 – 58 to
2.3- 15.
The third quarter was a similar repeat to the first scoring wise, we controlled the
game with the ball but with Cove again playing ultra defensive and protecting the
score we were unable to kick through their numbers but still held a 42 point lead at 3
quarter time. In the last quarter we were able to break through the Cove numbers
and hit the scoreboard as well as not falling to the style Cove wanted to play which
was a touch frustrating to watch as a coach, but the boys held their nerve well to run
away with a 16.8-104 to 5.8-38 victory.
Josh Rosman was impressive kicking 3 form the midfield with Blake Aldridge
rewarded with a solid game and kicking 3. Sam Smith was our best on the day
setting the tone with his pressure and forward craft, he also got amongst the goal
scorers kicking 2. Brad Kirk was composed in the contest and with ball in hand off
centre half back with Kearsley, Channing, Blake and Aldridge our better players.
Shoutout to Nath Beenham who was awarded the players player after the game, he
did not have his best game ball in hand but his team first work was first rate and was
recognised after the game by the group.
The bye has come at a good time for the group to reset mentally as well as
physically and we look forward to the back half of the year. All the best to Brad
Patterson and Nath Beenham with the association game taking place this weekend.
