Firstly, well done and congrats to Jacko Costello for making his West Adelaide U18
Debut and to Ethan Johnson playing his first game for the Bloods this season. Go well lads.
Rd 4 saw us up against our arch rivals, Happy Valley.
This is always a good test of will and character… for both teams.
With three players in for their first run of the season in Dan Scutchings, Jimmy Hele
and Jacob Ladbrook and with the bare 22 players available, this was a huge
opportunity for our younger brigade to see what they could deliver.
The game began with a southerly wind kicking in with rain to make the going a bit
challenging for players to begin with. The Flaggy boys adapted well early and
showed good physical pressure in the contest. The footy wasn’t pretty but it didn’t
have to be in the conditions.
As the game unfolded and the weather cleared, our running game became
important. We stuck well to the task and went in at ¾ time with the scores level and
coming home with a decent breeze. This however, did not go to plan and
unfortunately allowed the Vikings to get control of the ball early in the last to put 3
goals straight on the board. We rallied late but it was all to late and it didn’t help
kicking 7 straight points in a row to go down in the end by 11. Playing the complete
four quarters has eluded us this season but we are tracking in the right way.
Solid performance from a couple defenders in Kieran Smith and Tyler Hodgson as
well as Brodie Sisson having a change of role going through the middle.
We look forward now to being back on the road next week with our longest road trip
to Shark Park to face Aldinga.
See you at the footy

Best: Matt Caire, Declan Tomkins, Aaron Ramsey, James Brennan, Bradley Scott, Huw Channing, Twisty Smith.

Brett Charlesworth started the pre-game for us with an amazing history lesson in
relation to Bob Farrell and what he was to our club, the importance of the man and
the significance of the Baxter Farrell Shield. Whilst the B grade don’t play for the
shield we can certainly get the day off to a great start. Brett stayed for the pre-match
and presented Brad Draper with his first Guernsey for season 2023. BT spoke of his
relationship with Brad through both footy and growing up and Brad has showed
immense courage and tenacity to get back from his ACL in season 2022. A member
of the junior team of the decade, we all wish Brad the very best for 2023!
As a squad we were looking forward to playing against stronger opposition with a
good game and solid structures, we did have a nervous excitement. With the
formalities over we hit the oval and after a few minutes of testing each other we
began to find our mojo, we were up and about. First quarter was a tight affair with
our ruck dominance provided by Declan coming off leg injuries gave us first look.
Whilst we won a lot of taps we didn’t necessary win the contested footy with any
confidence. We ran hard into the wind with Aaron Ramsey having his first run at CHF
and marking everything – strongly presenting in front with the ball dropping short was
a recipe for success. In the second quarter with the wind, we started to flex our
muscles, running, sharing the footy, providing support to the ball carrier and
executing skills ensured we turned at the half 24 points in front.
The second half showed our dominance, our fitness and commitment to each other
and to how we want to play made it very difficult for the Vikings to move the ball. We
locked it in the front half and restricted them to just 2 points for the second half whilst
we kicked another 3 goals and 9 behinds. We had 24 scoring shots from nearly 50
forward entries, so achieving almost 50% scoring opportunities – the goals will
come. Huw Channing was a wall across half back, Jimmy “Gravy” Brennan
dominated his wing and Brad Scott played well on the other wing. We had
contributors on all lines and it was a case of all played well. The players responded
on the day and Bob would have been proud of the Falcon Pride. It really was Matt
Caire – who played an inspiring 4 quarters, providing all the strength and aggression
at the contest and opposition – we all walk a little taller when Matt is playing the
football, he is playing right now.
Well done to all the lads who missed selection but fronted up at the game, assisted
the coaching staff with filming the game, being the runner and water boys – this
shows how invested the playing group is – I was even more impressed when I
watched the C grade on Sunday and all the lads from B grade that played carried the structures and the team to a good win against Noarlunga at Noarlunga. This is how
we build an unbreakable spirit – well done.
This week it’s a cut lunch and water bag journey to Shark Park – looking forward to
getting on a big oval and seeing how we can move the footy.

Best Players: David Kearsley, Reece Milsom, Joshua Rosman, Ryan Mountford, Leith Mitchell, Michael Shearer.
Goal Kickers: Sam Smith 3, Michael Shearer 3, Sam Jacobs 3, Nick Bailey 2, Blake Aldridge 2, Aiden Grayson 2.
Round 4 we took on Happy Valley at home, for multiple reasons this was a big day
for the group. Prior to the game we were extremely lucky to have Brett Charlesworth
speak to the players about the Baxter Farrell Shield, the impact Bob Farrell had on
him individually and the club, what the day means and how special it is to so many
within the Flagstaff Hill community which was great insight for the group. We were
also celebrating milestone games to Nash Mitchell (50 th A grade game), Aiden
Grayson (50 th Club game) and we had Dave Kearsley speak before the game about
Mick Shearer and his 150 th A grade game. Again, this was great insight for the group
to hear the impact Mick has not only had on field, but off field as well and the type of
person he is and how highly he is respected by his teammates.
After winning the toss and kicking with the breeze in the first, we started well and
with Happy Valley bringing great intensity we were up for the fight but unfortunately,
we couldn’t capitalize in front of goal by kicking 3 goals 5 behinds to 1 goal at quarter
time after controlling the play for majority of the quarter. The second quarter Happy
Valley lifted their effort again which was a great challenge for the group especially
with a breeze heavily aiding the Northern end which Happy Valley were kicking with,
the back end of the quarter we were really pleased with the boys effort to hold it
down our end with their forward pressure and hit the scoreboard late to hold a 16
point lead at half time.
The third quarter was again another even quarter and we weren’t able to take
advantage of the breeze with Happy Valley defending well holding us to only two
goals for the quarter and keeping the lead down to 23 points at the final change with
the Vikings coming home with the wind. At 3 quarter time the coaches put the
challenge to the group, noting that the last quarter had been Happy Valley’s best
quarter of the year so far and we needed a big effort into the breeze. Credit to the
boys they responded and put in a good effort in the last to kick 8 goals into the
breeze to 2 goals for us to come away with a 62 point win.
Anytime you win against a quality opposition by 10 goals it’s very pleasing, but there
are still plenty of areas for improvement for the group and the constant quest of
playing 4 quarters for footy each week is still there driving the group. Better players
for the day were David Kearsley who was awarded the Bob Farrell Medal for driving
team standards all throughout the day, Reece Milsom and Josh Rosman were solid
through the mids whilst Ryan Mountford, Leith Mitchell and Mick Shearer all had
several moments that impacted the game. Sam Jacobs and Sam Smith continued
their goalkicking form with 3 each and milestone man Mick Shearer also kicked 3.
We move on to Aldinga this week and looking forward to another big challenge. See
you there!

Flagstaff Hill 5 8 38 defeated Reynella 2 4 16
Best Players: Ava Knuckey, Kaitlyn Aldridge, Angela Rose, Elizabeth Johnson, Kyah Smith, Alyssa Marlow.
Goal Kickers: Elizabeth Johnson 2, Charley Shirley 1, Amelia Jenson 1, Tiana Lush 1.
It was a great day for football, the weather cleared to be a bright sunny day.
Our girls didn’t have the best warm up. We lost the coin toss so we were kicking into
the wind for the first quarter. At the first ball up we battled hard.
Reynella kicked the first goal. We worked the ball into our forward line but could only
kick 1 point. We were a bit slow off the mark and still working our way into the
game, we got outscored for the quarter 2-3 to 0-1.
Quarter time break we split into our groups- backs, mids and forwards. We reset our
focus and prioritise a few things, being first to the ball, play in front and use our
voices more.
The team took it all on board and we took it to Reynella. Kicking 2-3 to 0-0 with the
wind. The girls tackled in packs, blocked out for each other and the voice was great.
We can’t underestimate what voice adds to the game play.
At the half time break we came in as a group to gather and it was all about what
players need to do take the game to the next level and that is exactly what the team
did.
Going into the third quarter and kicking into the wind, we made a point of getting an
early score on the board and we did! Kicking 2 valuable more points to Reynella 0
score.
Last quarter we came home with the wind. The backs had worked hard in the third
shutting down Reynella’s scoring opportunities and now the mids and forwards were
up and about, winning the ball out of the middle and working it efficiently into our
forward line. The forwards didn’t waste any opportunity given to them, kicking 3-2 for
the quarter to Reynella 0 -1. It was a great way to finish off the game girls!
